NANO components for electronic SMART wireless systems

Echipa

• Dr. Mircea Dragoman (the project manager) graduated from “Politehnica” University of Bucharest, Faculty of Electronics, and received his Ph.D. degree in electronics from the same faculty. Mircea Dragoman is a senior researcher I at IMT-Bucharest, and the director of the research department dedicated to carbon-based nanotechnologies where this project will be implemented. In the period 1992-1994 he was the recipient of the Humboldt Fellowship award and he followed postdoctoral studies at Duisburg University, Germany. He was invited professor at: CNR–Istituto di Elettronica dello Stato Solido, Roma, Italy; Univ. Saint-Etienne, France; Univ. Mannheim, Univ. Frankfurt, and Univ. Darmstadt, Germany. In the period 2005-2011 he was nominated directeur de recherche at LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse, France. He has more than 40 invited papers at international conferences. He has published over 350 scientific papers dedicated to the following areas: nanoelectronics, microwaves, MEMS, optoelectronics. He has co-authored 7 books published at Springer and Artech House. The last two published books are dedicated to physics and devices based on 2D materials. He has more than 5000 citations and h-index = 30.

• Dr. Martino Aldrigo obtained his M.S. degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 2009 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna, Italy. In 2014 he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications and Information Technology at the same university. In January 2014 he was hired at IMT Bucharest as Assistant Researcher and, since 2016, he is a permanent Scientific Researcher III (CSIII). He is/has been involved in many national and international projects, as both team member and coordinator. As per 2021, he has published 1 book chapter and more than 70 papers in ISI journals and conference proceedings. His research interests focus on the design, modeling, 3D electromagnetic simulation, fabrication, and experimental characterization of micro- and nano-devices and systems for microwave and millimeter-wave applications, based on graphene and other innovative 2D materials, and ferroelectric thin films for low-voltage and CMOS-compatible devices. h-index = 13 with 468 citations (Google Academic).

• Dr. Alina Cismaru graduated from the Physics Faculty in 1998, M.S. degree in physics in 2000, Ph.D. degree in semiconductor physics in 2008, University of Bucharest, Physics Faculty. Her current research activities are the design and characterisation of CNT- and graphene-based devices working as gas sensors and biosensors for microwave applications. Since September 1998 she has been employed as Scientific Researcher II (CSII) at IMT-Bucharest, Romania. His main expertise comprises the electromagnetic simulations and measurements of RF/microwave systems and CNT-based CO2 and CH4 sensors. In the field of his research activity at IMT she is deeply involved in the design of metamaterial-based antennas and resonators, and EMBG-based components for microwave applications for innovative micro- and nano-devices. She has co-authored 14 chapters in series books (Editura Academiei Romane, during the period 2005-2016). She was the project director of GRANT CNCSIS as Ph.D. student and was involved in a POSDRU EU project as a Postdoc Researcher. She was/is also involved as team member in 15 international projects (FP6, FP7, ENIAC, H2020) and in 16 national projects. She has (co-)authored more than 64 papers in ISI-ranked journals and national/international conferences, with over 500 citations. h-index = 15.

• Dr. Sergiu Iordanescu received the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University “Politehnica” Bucharest, Romania in 2000. From 1972 to 1977, he was with the Institute of Physics and Technology of Radiation Apparatus, Romania. He was Research Scientist with IMT-Bucharest, Romania, from 1977 to 2000 and Senior Engineer with Alvarion Romania SRL from 2000 to 2015. Since 2015, he is Senior Researcher with IMT-Bucharest, Romania. His research interests include microwave SAW filter, sensor and microwave/millimeter wave circuits design and characterization, dielectric and ferroelectric materials characterization. He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He received the “Tudor Tanasescu” Romanian Academy award (with team) in 2003. He has been an IEEE member since 1991.

Dr. Marius Andrei Avram is a full time Senior Researcher (h-index = 9) at IMT Bucharest and is the head of the Laboratory for Carbon Based Nanotechnologies and Nanostructures. Dr. Avram holds a B.Sc. degree in Physics (2009) and a M.Sc. degree in Plasma Physics (2010) from University of Bucharest, and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (2014) from “Politehnica” University Bucharest. He has an experience of over 10 years in developing and implementing plasma assisted process for etching and deposition of materials and process integration for the fabrication of micro- and nano- electronic devices and MEMS. Since started working as a researcher, he has been actively involved in the implementation of 15 national funded research projects, one of which he coordinated as project manager). Currently he is working on developing and integrating carbon-based materials, like CNTs, graphene, and derivatives, into different types of sensors for industrial and research applications. His main research interests are in developing carbon-based materials, and implementation of fabrication processes for MEMS, sensors, microfluidics, micro-nano-electronics, and dedicated microstructures. Dr. Avram will be responsible for designing the technological workflow and supervise the fabrication processes.

• Dr. Catalin Parvulescu has a Ph.D. degree on the topic “Micro-nanostructures: Optimized fabrication techniques” from the University Politechnica, Bucharest, 2015. Currently, he is a Technological Development Engineer III in the laboratory of technological processing with main activities in photolithography process. He has a professional experience in photolithography processes, processing and characterization of photosensitive films, wet etching, nanoimprint lithography processes, bonding processes, microfabrication processes for microfluidics, sensors, opto-microelectronics devices and solar cells. He has co-authored more than 35 papers in international journals and conferences and 8 national patents. He led/is leading 3 national projects as coordinator, 25 national projects as member teams. During his academic career, which started in 2013, Dr. Parvulescu has been head of work at University Politehnica of Bucharest – Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, master course holder „Electronic technologies for optoelectronic applications”. He supervised more than 10 master students. Dr. Parvulescu will be responsabile for device fabrication activities.

Obiectivul proiectului este realizarea unei antene de tip patch cu grafena nanocristalina (GNC) avand frecventa de operare in banda 24-26 GHz pentru aplicatii 5G. GNC este un material care poate fi crescut pe o varietate de substrate izolatoare si care prezinta in acelasi timp conductie ohmica foarte buna si proprietati mecanice, chimice si optice care pot fi utilizate in mai multe aplicatii: electronica, optoelectronica si electrozi transparenti, sisteme MEMS, senzori piezorezistivi. Frecventa de operare aleasa este in banda ISM 24 GHz (ISM = Industrial, Scientific and Medical, banda 24-24.25 GHz) si este de interes pentru aplicatii radar de tip FM-CW (Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave) folosite in retelele moderne de monitorizare in spatiu inchis a parametrilor biologici recoltati de senzori aplicati pe utilizatori / pacienti. Fabricarea unei antene cu GNC va permite crearea unui dispozitiv reconfigurabil in frecventa / putere prin aplicarea unei tensiuni de polarizare (de cel mult ± 25 V) pe filmul de GNC, astfel permitand un control imbunatatit asupra sistemului de telecomunicatii bazat pe radarul de tip FM-CW. Antena astfel obtinuta poate fi integrata monolitic intr-o platforma, impreuna cu alte componente – precum senzori – si utilizata in aplicatii medicale, ceea ce reprezinta una dintre tintele proiectului NANOSMART.
