INTEGRAMplus Integrated MNT platforms and services-- service action (FP6, IST, 2005 – 2009)

The overall aim of this Service Action Integrated Project was to provide access to services and prototyping platforms with a route to manufacture for highly integrated microsystems, combining smart silicon functionality with polymer in a multi-domain environment. This was achieved by extending the Europractice manufacturing Cluster INTEGRAM, which focused on Silicon sensors and electronics, to multi-technologies (Silicon, polymers) and multi-domains (fluidic, optical, mechanical, electrical, biological).

The combination of the complementary capabilities of the partners and the ability to design, prototype and manufacture via a distributed network demonstrated a new flexible manufacturing methodology for mixed-technology systems. INTEGRAMplus aimed to overcome these barriers and stimulate take-up of smart microsystems by SMEs in emerging markets for the information/ageing society.

Within INTEGRAMplus, IMT is involved in different activities, corresponding to different project tasks.

  • In the Prototyping and Manufacturing Access workpackage (WP4), IMT was in charge of providing access to biosensing and biointegration (microfluidics-based), providing know-how in developing and integrating bio-diagnostic applications and contributing to the development of the optical/fluidic platform, providing simulation, design and experiments of specific technological processes.
  • Within WP6 (Design and virtual manufacture), IMT dealt with modelling and simulation for MEMS, optical and microfluidic devices as well as Silicon-Polymer hybrid simulation. Different tools were used and analysed in order to provide complete and comparative modelling for multi-domain design and simulation.
  • IMT was involved also in the Technology convergence and integrationactivities (WP7), acting in microfluidic simulation (3-D models and fluidic functions), support in the fabrication of polymer and hollow waveguides for interface tests, developing methodologies for integration of biomaterials into micro and nanosystems, including new processes for biomaterials deposition, packaging and measurement.
  • Due to its previous experience from FP6 SSA projects, IMT also had training and educationalactivities (within WP3), by developing new training modules for the INTEGRAMplus portfolio, preparing and delivering courses, training visits (presenting and visiting the technological facilities), organizing regional events for Eastern participants to attract industry as potential users of the project services.

TOXICHIP Development of a toxin screening multi-parameter on-line biochip system (FP6, STREP, ICT, 2006-2009)

The primary objective was to develop a eukaryote cell based biochip that allows continual on-line monitoring of a wide range of parameters including cell impedance, changes in morphology, distribution and pH of cells.

This technology helped to provide an in-depth knowledge of the various cellular responses that occur as a result of toxicity and have major beneficial implications in such applications as neurology, cytotoxicity and pharmacology.

IMT was responsible for the development of a temperature sensor, as well as a pH sensor, that were integrated with the microfluidic platforms. This objective was carried out in WP4 (Development of Sensor Platforms), led by IMT. It also included the development of the data acquisition system to be used with these platforms.

The sensors, integrated with the microfluidic system

IMT’s specific activities included:

  • Development of temperature sensor integrated with the microfluidic platform:
  • Simulation and design of the temperature sensor together with the microfluidic part where the sensor is integrated;
  • Study of the compatibility of the sensor with the chemical aggressive working environment;
  • Biocompatibility of the microsensor materials with the biological media;
  • Experiments, manufacturing design and testing;
  • Development of pH sensors integrated with the microfluidic platform:
  • Simulation and design of the pH sensor together with the microfluidic part where the sensor is positioned;
  • Development of materials, manufacturing steps, experiments and testing;
  • Development of the data acquisition system:
  • Methodology on the data acquisition system;
  • Design and implementation of the data acquisition system;

NEUROSENSE Integrated system for concurrent electrophysiological and chemical recording at neuronal level
(National R&D Project, 2007 – 2010

This project developed a complete, integrated system for neural recording, with direct applicability in fundamental and applied neuroresearch. The key target elements of the proposed research were:
  • the development of a recording microelectrode with multiple recording sites, fabricated in silicon based MEMS technology, for combined extracellular electrical recording (action potentials) and electrochemical sensing (pH and dopamine level in the extracellular environment)
  • development of an adequate coating solution for ensuring a performant mechanical resistance even for longer electrode shanks
  • improvement of the S/N ratio performance supported by the electrode, by designing a micro/nanostructuring technology on the surface of the recording sites
  • development of the associated electronic circuitry for signal processing, digitization and computer transfer, display and acquisition, such that a ready-to-be-used experimental chain.
